I know traditions have changed over time, but it was by men not the Most High Mark7v7-8 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. Colossians2v8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. In other words these writers are all liars, the changed the words of God to fit their traditions. The most High gave the Children of Israel commandments they should keep, no where did the Most High say the stones are to be used for Birthstones, if He wanted it so,wouldn't He have made it so.
Well, I'm really not the one to ask, as I'm not a Christian. :) I look at the Bible as an historical source that has been hugely influential on Western society, which is why I'm interested at all in its role in the development of the idea of birthstones. And it's just an historical fact that people have taken that source and written other things about it, some of which have developed into traditions of their own. Whether you accept those later traditions is up to you.

Isaiah34v16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. The book of the LORD is the Bible, no other book is equal to the Bible, nor do I need to read a book that men feel free to lie on the words of the Most High. Romans1v25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen . Whatever other source It read still won't explain the fact that the stones Exodus28v21 shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet(seal);every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes. O.k so lets say we don't know the exact stones because things "change" over time, did the fact that they were only to used for the purpose of bearing the name of the twelve tribe of Israel "change" also. And if so why read anything in the Bible or even refence it if it has lost it's crediabily

Since I haven't yet finished the explanation beyond Part 1, you might want to take a look at my primary source on the matter, which is a book called The Curious Lore of Precious Stones by George Frederick Kunz. It's an old book that is available online; you can find it here on Google books:

http://books.google.com/books/about/Curious_Lore_of_Precious_Stones.html?id=kM7tB1m2E4kC

Chapter 9 is all about the history of birthstones, and Chapter 8 just before it goes into more detail about the stones listed in Exodus (because there isn't a firm consensus on which stones are listed, as many of the names have changed since ancient times.) But I suspect Chapter 9 would answer your questions about how the stones got linked to the apostles and thence to the months.

The short answer, I suspect, is just that people like to draw comparisons and expand on traditions over time. But if you're only looking for references that are clearly in the Bible, you probably won't be satisfied with the answers Kunz gives.

I hope that helps, and thanks for your comments!

I understood exactly what was written, what I don't understand is how did writers come to the conclusion that the twelve apostles represents the twelve months, and the stones Exodus28v17-21 clearly states that the stones( Sardius, topaz, carbuncle, emerald, sapphire, diamond, ligure, agate, amethyst, beryl, onyx, and jasper represented the twelve tribes of Israel, and not Birthstones. The Israelites did not celebrate Birthdays. I was just wondering how anybody could have made any corelation is beyond me.

Right, there is no reference to "birthstones" in the Bible itself; my point here is that the idea of birthstones originally grew out of the two lists of stones in the Bible (one in Exodus, regarding the breastplate of the High Priest, and one in Revelation, as you mentioned.)

The trouble is, I never got around to finishing this series of posts, so what's there is still rather vague. :) I did hint at the connection, though, when I mentioned how later writers made connections between the stones and the months of the year. I do plan to get back to the subject at some point, but thanks for your comment in the meantime!
